Yesterday Billy gave me 3 reasons that apparently demonstrate that I am going through a midlife crisis. Are these reasons things I really said? Yep! Am I really going through a midlife crisis? I don't think so!
Reason #1: "Honey, we're old!"
A few weekends ago, Billy and I went to "Magic Mountain." As soon as we walked in the door, I aged about 20 years. Over 95% of the people there were teenagers. I felt so out of place - me, out of school, married, with 3 kids! Not 1, not 2, but 3 kids!
This whole "age-thing" actually started on my birthday, 2 months ago. I had never been ashamed of telling people how old I was until this year. I am getting closer and closer each day to turning 30, and that scares me. If this is a midlife crisis, then turning 30 is going to be a never-ending life crisis.
Reason #2: "Babe, we're boring!"
This happened just a few days ago. Because the boys' bedtime is between 8 and 8:30 p.m. and Billy's bedtime is between 8:30 and 9 p.m., we decided we wouldn't go see fireworks on the 4th of July this year.
Since having kids, we've had to work around naps, bedtimes, feedings, and meals, and it has kept us from doing a lot of fun stuff. Changing the routine means setting ourselves up for failure. It creates a fussy baby and cranky kids, which in turn leads to unhappy parents. So we just don't do anything and we don't go anywhere.
Also, this month,Billy has had to get up around 4 a.m. in order to be at the hospital by 5 a.m. He usually comes home around 6 p.m., if we're lucky, then we eat dinner and play before he goes upstairs to study, read scriptures, and go to sleep. It doesn't leave us much time to do anything or go anywhere. It's hard, but I know it will all be worth it. It's just going to take a few years before we can see the results of our hard work.
Reason #3: "Dang it, I'm fat!"
Although I haven't gained as much weight with this pregnancy as I did with the previous one, I have definitely gained more fat and I have had a much harder time losing the extra pounds. Perhaps I haven't burned as many calories breastfeeding 4 hours a day as I did breastfeeding and pumping nearly 12 hours a day. Perhaps I never had the need or desire to exercise or diet until now. Perhaps seeing the same number on the scale each night after running and not eating sweets is depressing and unmotivating. Perhaps I just need to keep at it until I see results, no matter how hard it is or how long it takes.
So is this a midlife crisis? Nah, just facts. We are getting older. Being boring is just a stage. And these extra pounds won't always be there. All in all, I am happy with my life. I have everything I always wanted: an amazing husband and wonderful children. I am so blessed to be able to stay home to raise these little angels sent to us from Heaven. I couldn't be happier with my life. I have it all.
